Abstract

This paper examines the stages of natural objects reorganized by pneuma in Stoic physics, focusing on the role of pneuma as a force that, at various degrees of tension, forms material natural objects. In his systematization of Stoic physics, Chrysippus presents a model in which a body’s intrinsic mobility is explained in a conceptual and systematic way through tensional motion (tonikē kinēsis). This paper argues that the explanatory system of the stages of natural objects, reorganized according to the four principal conditions of pneuma, indicates the uniqueness of how Chrysippus perceived the structure of natural things. This paper examines, in particular, the four conditions of pneuma according to their degree of tension (tonos), as suggested by Chrysippus, and it clarifies the implications of Stoic reasoning concerning the types and hierarchies of the material objects in Nature through the conditions of pneuma. Chrysippus suggested four principal conditions for pneuma, each reflecting different degrees of tension (tonos): cohesion (hexis), nature or growth (physis), soul (psychē), and the rational soul (logikē psychē). These four stages of pneuma constitute the structure of inorganic matter; the structure of biological organisms, such as plants; the principle of life in animals; and the rationality in adult human beings, respectively. This extends the spectrum of description concerning the stages of living beings in Aristotle’s On the Soul to the inorganic stage, presenting a systematic description that encompasses all types of things in the world. Thus, Chrysippus extended the concept of pneuma, creating a concept explaining the conditions of things and turning it into a cosmological concept. This is Chrysippus’s unique contribution to the evolution of Stoic physics, according to which the soul is considered a condition (or a stage) of pneuma in the system that has been reorganized by pneuma. This system, thereby, destroys the ontological wall that is assumed to exist between living and nonliving things and provides a unified explanation of the structure of all existing things, embracing both inorganic and organic substances.
