Abstract

This article deals with the interpretive debate about the Stoic ontological classification system, focusing on the Stoic universal theory. The Stoics reduce Plato’s Ideas to concepts(ennoēmata) in the mind and deny the reality of universals. According to them, a concept is an intentional object of conceptions(ennoiai) formed through sense and experience or by teaching and training. Concepts are treated as a kind of ‘apparitions’(phantasmata), similar to fictional entities in that they are formed by the human cognitive system and have no reality outside the soul, but play an epistemological role in that they are formed by the experiences or teachings of sense objects. The discussion about the Stoic ontological classification is centered on the Stoic theory of universals. Three issues are relevant. Regarding the first issue, the highest-class ‘something’(ti), a position in support of the particularity criterion and a position in support of the thinkability can be divided. The former asserts that only the individual is included in ‘something’, while the latter says that universals are also included in ‘something’. In the case of the second issue, whether or not the universal category ‘not-something’(outina) exists, the supporter of the particularity criterion acknowledges its existence, while the proponent of the thinkability criterion denies it. The third issue, the similarity between fictional entities and universals, reveals the fact that, on the one hand, the Stoics showed interest in fictional entities that depend on the human cognitive system, on the other hand, it could show that they sharply distinguished them from particulars. Concerning these three issues, this article argues that the position supporting the criterion of particularity is more persuasive and that the core of the Stoic ‘conceptualism’ lies in emphasizing the epistemological role of the universal while weakening the ontological status of the universal.
