Abstract

This paper seeks a critical understanding of the causal paths and characteristics of New Economic Geography’s modeling in which the spatial problem has been interpreted in a new and innovative way within economics. To this end, some discussions about the spatial problem are reviewed over time within both economics and New Economic Geography. This work may contribute to enhancing an understanding of differences between orthodox New Economic Geography and heterodox New Economic Geography. On the other hand, it could give new room for reflecting on the origin and nature of external effects derived from the different types of market structure with regard to the spatial problem.
