A Study on Korea’s Urban Knowledge: Focusing on the Post-1980s Urban Situation

이 글은 1980년대 후반 이후 한국의 사회적 상황 속에 규정된 도시현실의 특성과 이의 인지적 반영으로서 도시지식(도시론)의 유형과 내부지형, 그리고 담론적 특성 등을 살펴보고자 한다. 1980년대 후반이란 시점을 선택한 것은 이때부터 도시화가 성숙기를 맞았고, 또한 현재의 도시공간은 이 기간에 획득된 도시적 개성을 반영하고 있기 때문이다. 글의 순서는 도시지식의 개념적 문제를 살펴본 뒤, 1980년대 후반 이후를 ① 1987년에서 1992년, ② 1993년에서 1997년, ③ 1998년에서 2002년, ④ 2002년에서 2007년까지로 나누어, 시대별 ‘정치경제적 상황’, ‘도시쟁점과 도시주체의 반응’, ‘도시공간의 생산’, ‘도시해석’, ‘도시론’, ‘도시의 근대성’을 논구하면서, 마지막으로 한국 도시담론의 유형화를 도출하는 것으로 전개된다.
Abstract
This paper attempts to examine Korea’s post-1980s urban reality and its cognitive reflection on ‘urban knowledge’. Analytical focus is on revealing the typology, internal power configuration and discursive attributes of urban knowledge. The reason why the time ‘post-1980s’ is chosen for review is because Korea’s urbanization is at a phase of ‘maturity’ in the late1980s and the contemporary urbanity of Korea reflects the urban characteristics obtained since then. The paper is organized as follows. It begins with taking a review on the conceptual issues of city and knowledge. Then it is followed by examining the urban reality and knowledge in the four distinctive periods corresponding to governmental years: 1987～1992, 1993～1997, 1998～2002, 2003～2007. In each temporal period, examination is made on the political economic situation, urban issues and the urban subject’s cognitive reaction to these, urban interpretation, theorization of city and urban modernity. Final section draws the typology of urban knowledge and discourses in Korea.
