Abstract
This study examines how local ecological knowledge contribute to the developmentof community-based management of natural resources through a case studyin Thailand. Community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) has beenadvocated to create local ecological knowledge (LEK) and tackle ineffective managementby remote top-down planning and centralized management. However, otherscriticize this approach for complicatedness in governance practices and/or hiddencost of public participation. Thus, recent studies turn their focus to rather contextualdevelopment of mixed institutions than generalized application of single institution, moreover, to adopt heuristic approach based on the social learning of governancepractices at the community level. Theoretically, this study prompts to raise questionson to what extent CBNRM evolved as an institution by analysing multi-stakeholderparticipation. Empirically, this study aims to put forward the contemporary governanceliterature by investigating how environmental conflicts have been managedby the current governance structures in the Thailand, where top-down and bottom-up institutions are interconnected and/or contested one another. Furthermore,to understand grassroots movement of environmental resources through this researchmay shed lights on a bigger question: how South Korean public/civilian organizationswork together with Thai society for more sustainable development in the Mekongregion.
