이 논문은 2015년에서 2022년 사이 읍면동 단위에서 외국인의 전국적인 인구분포와 거주지 분리 정도를 상이지수와 타일지수를 통해 분석한다. 이 연구의 분석 결과는 2010년대중반에서 2020년대 초반 사이 상당한 외국인 거주지 분리 정도를 나타내고 있으며, 다양한지역 수준 중 읍면동, 시군구, 시도 순서로 외국인 인구분포가 거주지 분리에 크게 기여하고 있음을 보인다. 거주지 분리 정도는 비자 종류와 사회경제적 요소를 반영하는 국적에 따라 다르게 나타났으며, 특히 개발도상국 출신(방글라데시, 스리랑카, 네팔 등)의 거주지 분리가 선진국 출신(미국, 일본)에 비해 매우 높게 나타났다. 연구 기간 시군구 내 읍면동 수준에서 외국인의 공간 분포가 거주지 분리에 끼치는 영향력이 증가하고 있으며, 이는 보다세밀한 스케일에서 나타나는 거주지 분리에 대응할 정책의 마련이 중요할 수 있음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This study investigates immigrant residential segregation in South Korea at the eup-myeon-dong level from 2015 to 2022, utilizing dissimilarity and Theil’s H indices. The findings indicate a substantial level of segregation during this period, with finer spatial scales contributing more significantly to overall residential segregation. Segregation patterns differ significantly by nationality, reflecting differences in visa types and socioeconomic characteristics. Immigrants from developing countries (e.g., Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal) exhibit relatively higher levels of residential segregation compared to those from developed countries (e.g., the United States, Japan). The increasing influence of eup-myeon-dong-level segregation over time underscores the need for targeted, localized policy interventions to address potential issues around immigrant residential segregation.
