Abstract

This paper examines the rapidly growing field of more-than-human social sciences, which encompasses a range of posthumanist approaches, including more-thanhuman geographies, multispecies anthropology, new materialism, and extended animal studies. Inspired by several recent turns in the social sciences – the material turn, the animal turn, and the ontological turn - more-than-human social sciences endeavour to explore how humans and nonhumans shape and are shaped by each other, co-constituting the world together, without making a recourse to prevalent dualistic and anthropocentric frameworks. This paper first offers a critical review of more-than-human social sciences by examining flat ontologies, epistemological pluralism, and political-ethical sensibilities. It then reflects on recent criticisms that more-than-human social sciences tend to remain apolitical and uncritical. It then identifies and discusses several avenues for further development, including various and conflicting forms of multispecies entanglements, methodological innovations, multispecies justice and intersectionality, and more-than-human collaborations and alliances. The paper concludes by considering the utility of more-than-human social sciences, arguing that they enable us to imagine the new and possible ways for humans might live well together with nonhumans amid the socioecological crisis of the Anthropocene.
