Abstract
“Nonghobyeo”, was derived from a mutant of Milyang 95, by pure line selection method, which was developed from the single cross between Chukei 1016 and Milyang 79, by the rice breeding team of National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station (NYAES) in 1998 and released in 1999. It has about 107 days of growing duration from seeding to heading and relatively short culm length of 84 cm with high adaptability of direct seeding on dry paddy. This variety with short, thick and stiff culm is considerably tolerant to lodging. It is moderately resistant to leaf and neck blast and stripe virus disease but susceptible to bacterial blight and insect pests. Short round grain of this variety has translucent endosperm and it has almost similar physicochemical properties and good eating compared to Dongjinbyeo. The milled rice yield of Nonghobyeo is 5.63 MT/ha in transplanting culture of ordinary season, 5.3 MT/ha in direct seeding cultivation on local adaptability test plots. It revealed a little higher yield capacity compared with Juanbyeo and Nonganbyeo in direct seeding cultivation. Nonghobyeo would be adaptable to direct seeding cultivation and transplanting culture in southern plain of Korea.
