Abstract
"Hwaanbyeo" is an high quality, high yielding and cold tolerant rice variety adaptable to direct seeding rice cultivardeveloped by the rice breeding team of the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA, Suwon from 1991 to 2000 and released in2001. Hwaan is a japonica rice variety developed from F1 anther culture of a single cross between Suweon362 and SR10778-2-2. This variety has about 146 days of growth duration from seeding to heading and is the semi-dwarf type with 81cm in culmlength. It has erect plant architexure, thick culm, and green leaves. It has good panicle shape with around 102 spikelets per panicleand rare awns. This variety is resistant to leaf blast, bacterial blight and stripe virus disease, but susceptible to other diseases andinsect pests. Milled rice of Hwaanbyeo is transluscent with non-glutinous endosperm and medium small round-grain. The yieldperformance of Hwaanbyeo is about 5.26 MT/ha at direct-seeding culture and 5.49 MT/ha at ordinary transplanting culturerespectively in the local adaptability test for three years. Hwaanbyeo would be adaptable to midle and southern plain of Koreafor direct-seding culture or transplanting rice culture.
