Abstract
A new Japonica rice variety “Weonhwangbyeo”, released in 1999, was developed from the cross Milyang96//Milyang95/Iri390 made at the Yeongdeog Substation of National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station, RDA. The average heading date of Weonhwangbyeo is Aug. 14, and it is about 76 cm tall excluding panicle. It is moderately resistant to wind injury bacterial leaf blight, stripe virus and blast, but susceptible to blast disease and major insect pests. Grain appearance is round and clean without white belly and core and eating quality of Weonhwangbyeo is almost same as that of Hwaseongbyeo. The yield potential of Weonhwangbyeo appears about 5.46 MT/ha at 15% moisture in milled rice, 4% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo in the local adaptability test at 6 sites during 1996~1998. It would be adaptable to the ordinary cropping area of eastern and south-eastern coastal region of Korea.
