Abstract : The six rowed and naked barley cultivar, “Dasong” (Hordeum vulgare L.), showing earliness, good cooking quality, resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus disease (BaYMV), winter hardiness, and high yielding in paddy field, was developed at Honam Agricultural Research Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA in 2005. It was derived from the cross between “HB87207-B-1-3-2” and “Iksan 41”. “HB87207-B-1-3-2” has a early heading with winter hardiness, large grain, and good cooking quality, while “Iksan 41” has a high yield, earliness, and winter hardiness. Among the cross made in 1996, a promising line showed both good yield and lodging resistance in the Yield Trial tested at Iksan in 2001 to 2002, being designated as “Iksan 66”. “Iksan 66” showed good performances in the Regional Yield Trials (RYT) tested in seven locations (2003 - 2005) and was released as the name of “Dasong”. “Dasong” shows the growth habit of Ⅲ, erect plant type, green leaf and stem similar to the check cultivar “Saessalbori”. It’s heading date was April 29 in upland, and April 19 in paddy field conditions, and maturing time was June 4 and May 29, which were three and two days earlier than those of “Saessalbori”, respectively. The new cultivar “Dasong” had 85 cm of culm length and 4.5 cm of spike length. It showed 638 spikes per m2, 58 grains per spike, 29 g of 1,000-grain weight, and 765 g of test weight. “Dasong” showed better winter hardiness and lodging tolerance than those of the check cultivar “Saessalbori”. This new cultivar showed resistance to BaYMV in the four tested sites. It showed similar seed quality to the check cultivar “Saessalbori” in respect to protein content, pearled grain rate, whiteness of pearled grain. However, it showed higher β-glucan contents, and water absorption rate, expansibility of pearled grain than those of check cultivar. Its average yield of the pearled grain in the regional yield trial was 4.39 MT ha-1 in upland and 3.86 MT ha-1 in paddy field, which was 15% and 7% higher than those of the check cultivar “Saessalbori”, respectively. This cultivar would be suitable for the area above the daily minimum temperature of -8℃ in January in Korean peninsula.
