Abstract
Recent food scandals and scares have led to an increased public interest in the local food system. Farmers’ markets have been promoted as an important measure for building a local food system as an alternative to a food system dominated by huge supermarkets and global agri-food businesses. While much has been said about the farmers’ markets, little research has been done in Korea. We attempt to fill this gap by an empirical analysis of Wonju farmers’ market consumers based on the survey data. Wonju farmers’ market has a long and successful history, judging by relatively high level of satisfaction by both farmers and consumers. In general, the participating farmers tend to have great content in earning stable cash income, which can be termed ‘marketness.’ Yet, in order for the farmers’ market to become a genuine alternative food system, another dimension needed be considered, i.e. ‘embeddedness’ such as trust. We employ the theoretical concepts of marketness and embeddedness in analyzing consumers attitudes and behaviors of Wonju Farmers’ Market in order to understand the current state and future potentials of farmers’ market. We have conducted extensive survey of the consumers of Wonju farmers’ market. Our statistical analysis has demonstrated some interesting findings. First, We found out that embededness of Wonju farmers’ market shows comparatively high levels especially in dimensions such as peoducer trust, food safety and willing to buy local food, bur we found also some sub dimension with low embeddedness such as environmental cosideration and awareness of local food movement, which were approved to be affected by factors operating in outside market, ie. social economic status. Second, we found out that the marketness of Wonju farmers’ market has two distinct characteristics, one is that the price merit cheaper than other market induces customers to market, the other is that customers evaluate price merit associated with embededness as higher embededness accepts price more positively. Third long term transaction with a particular producer-seller (or ‘regular’) is an important variable in forming trust. This particular form of social embeddedness was built most importantly by frequent purchasing which seemed to be more than a simple monetary transaction. Third, it is found that the consumers who have stable relationship with particular farmers also tend to have higher awareness of the local food, which might be called ‘local’ embeddedness. Based on these findings, we can suggest that the policies to support stable opening of farmers’ market and to encourage regular encounter between farmers and consumers should be developed and implemented.
