Abstract

The purpose of this study was to review programs and laws of therapeutic farms, therapeutic gardens, and therapeutic animals in the U.S.A. This study was to describe how and when therapeutic farms and therapeutic gardens, and therapeutic animals started and developed in the U.S. through a review of a wide range of empirical research studies on therapeutic farms and horticulture therapy, diverse programs and services provided by therapeutic farms and horticulture therapy gardens, and laws and principles that were applied for utilizing therapeutic farms and horticulture therapy gardens in the U.S. In the U.S., many therapeutic farms have been developed over 100 years in the form of residential treatments. Most of the farms were for adults who had a psychiatric illness or dual diagnosis. The cost was not supported by insurance companies and individuals paid the cost. Many farms provided both educational and training courses for residents as well as therapeutic treatments. Therapeutic farms faced challenges related finance, laws, and leadership. For public people, community gardens and botanical gardens were popular in the U.S. for educating school children and their families, preventing illness, and promoting public health. There were several associations for therapeutic farms based on the characteristics of farms. Each association shared information such as principles for administrating farms and provided many educational courses for therapists. Many farms followed several acts or laws including the American’s with Disabilities Act and most farms practiced principles and policies that each association and/or state set. Implications that how therapeutic farms and horticulture therapy gardens can be applied in South Korea are suggested to promote community engagement for educational purposes.
