융의 원형 심리학에 대한 과정철학적 고찰: 원형의 기원을 중심으로

화이트헤드의 과정철학은 융의 원형 심리학에서 말하는 원형의 기원에 대해 보다 합리적으로 설명할 수 있어 보인다. 과정철학적 설명은 원형의 기원에 대해 융 자신의 설명을 부정하고 새로운 것을 제시하기보다 그것을 포섭 보완하면서 확대시킨다. 과정철학과 융의 원형 심리학은 공통적으로 인간의 마음과 두뇌를 구분하지만 동질의 두 실재로 봄으로써 함께 존재론 차원에서 근대적 세계관을 넘어선다. 그러나 감각주의에 서 있는 융은 마음과 두뇌 그리고 마음과 마음의 상호작용을 설명하지 못한다. 과정철학은 감각주의 인식론에 없는 비감각적 지각 개념으로 이 부분을 보충하여 원형 형성의 메카니즘을 보다 설득력 있게 설명할 수 있다. 그런데 과정철학이 원형의 기원을 비교적 성공적으로 설명한다 하더라도, 융이 말한 집단무의식과 원형이라는 이론의 타당성에 대해서 아직 논쟁이 있으므로 과정철학과 원형 심리학의 관계가 마치 이론과 검증의 관계인 것처럼 보는 것은 피해야 할 것이다. 그러나 이 과정에서 두 사상은 각각의 지평을 넓힐 수 있으며 또 서로 배울 수 있음은 사실이다. 특히 과정철학에서 평소 잘 드러나지 않던 혼성적인 물리적 파악과 원격작용 개념이 재조명을 받는 것은 큰 수확이다.
Abstract
Although C. G. Jung suggested the idea of collective unconscious and archetypes in it which are not based on personal experiences, he did not seem to explain adequately enough the mechanism of their formation. Whiteheadian process philosophy seems to provide a more adequate explanation on the mechanism of their formation. It is the concept of physical prehension in process philosophy that plays a crucial role in its explaining how archetypes are formed. In process framework, the past influences the present through physical prehension. Reversely speaking, the present actual entities begin their concrescence by prehending the past. The numerously repeated events in the past strongly influence the present actual entities, so that the present actual entities are tempted strongly to actualize the eternal objects within the repeated past events. The repeated past events come to form powerful unconscious tendencies universally in people’s mind, which are archetypes in collective unconscious in Jung’s psychology.
