삶의 만족도와 관련요인의 세대 간 차이에 대한 탐색적 연구 : 한국복지패널 자료를 이용한 베이비 붐 세대와 이전 및 이후 세대 간 비교

초록

급속한 고령사회로의 진행과 이로 인해 예측되는 다양한 사회적 부담은 베이비부머에 대한 관심을 고조시키고 있다. 하지만 베이비부머의 특징을 세대 간 비교를 통해서 고찰한 실증적 연구는 많지 않다. 본 연구는 삶의 만족도 및 관련 변수들에 대한 세대 간 비교를 통해 베이비붐 세대의 특징을 이해하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구대상은 한국복지패널조사에참석한 18세 이상 성인 14,850명으로, 베이비붐 세대(1차년도 기준 43-51세) 2,269명과 비교집단으로 베이비붐 이후세대(1차년도 18-42세) 6,044명 및 베이비붐 이전세대(1차년도 기준 52세 이상) 6,537명으로 구성된다. 연구방법은 삶의 만족도 및 관련변수들이 세대간(이후세대-베이비붐세대-이전세대) 차이가 있는지에 대한 카이검증 및 F-검증을 통한 이항분석과 관련 변수들을 통제한 상태에서 삶의 만족도의 세대 간 차이를 보는 구조방정식을 이용한 다항분석을 사용하였다. 카이검증 결과 베이비붐 세대는 성별, 질병유무에서는 베이비붐 이후세대와 유사한 분포를 보였고, 수급여부 및 장애유무에서는 베이비붐 이전세대와 유사한 분포를 보였다. F-검증 결과 베이비붐 세대는 교육, 소득, 가족관계, 건강상태, 외래서비스 이용 및 입원 서비스 이용에 있어서 베이비붐 이후세대와 베이비붐 이전세대의 중간정도의 평균을 보여주었다. 하지만 건강검진 서비스 이용은 세대 간 유의한 차이가 없었다. 관련 변수들을 통제한 구조방정식 분석을 통한 삶의 만족도의 세대 간 비교 결과는 베이비붐 세대가 상대적으로 가장 낮은 수준의 삶의 만족도를 나타내어 연령과 만족도의 관계가U-형태이고, 베이비붐 세대의 상대적 행복도가 가장 낮다는 것을 보여준다. 삶의 만족도와예측요인의 관계에 대한 다집단분석 결과는 베이비붐 세대가 베이비붐 이전세대와 유사한부분이 많고 베이비붐 이후세대와는 다소 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 향후 연구의 방향성 및 실천적 함의에 대해서 논하였다.

Abstract

Baby boomers became the center of our attention due to the rapidly aging society and social burdens accompanied by the rapid aging. Few previous studies, however,have examined the characteristics of baby boomers by comparing them with other generations. This study aims to understand the characteristics of baby boomers through several generational comparisons. Data include 14,850 adults aged 18 and over who participated in the Korean Welfare Panel Study - specifically, 2,269 baby boomers, 6,044 younger people, and 6,537 older people. In order to examine whether baby boomers differ from other generations, both bivariate(e.g., Chi-test and F-test)and multi-variate analyses(e.g., Structural Equation Modeling) were used. The results of Chi-square test revealed that baby boomers differ from other generations in the distributions of gender, chronic illnesses, public assistance, and disability. The results of F-test also showed that baby boomers are significantly different from other generations in the levels of education, income, family relations, subjective health, and medical service uses. But they did not differ from other generations in the levels of preventive health examination services. Controlling for related factors, the results of SEM showed that the levels of baby boomers' life satisfaction is significantly lower than those of younger and older generations, indicating that the relationship between age and life satisfaction is U-shaped and that the happiness levels of baby boomers may be the lowest among the three generations. Multi-group SEM revealed that many life satisfaction predictors of baby boomers differ from those of other generations. Based on the findings, future research directions and practical implications were discussed.
