Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the effects of lower limb strengthening exercises on gait and balance ability in elderly women, in elderly women, to contribute to their health improvement and fall prevention. Additionally, it aimed to provide appropriate exercise programs tailored for the elderly population. A total of 30 women aged 65 or older were randomly assigned to either a lower limb strengthening exercise group (n = 15) or a control group (n = 15). The study compared and analyzed changes in gait and balance ability pre-and post-intervention following an 8-week exercise program. In the lower limb strengthening exercise group, left and right step length significantly increased in pre- and post-exercise gait comparisons (p < 0.05). Balance ability improved significantly, as evidenced by a reduction in sway length under both openand closed-eye conditions. Additionally, the ellipse surface area significantly decreased in the open-eye condition, suggesting enhanced postural control. When comparing gait between the two groups, the lower limb strengthening exercise group demonstrated a statistically significant increase in left and right step length post-intervention. Regarding balance ability, sway length was significantly reduced under both open- and closed-eye conditions. These findings suggest that lower limb strengthening exercises can be effectively integrated into fall prevention programs for elderly women. The development of tailored exercise programs that concurrently enhance gait stability and balance ability could be particularly beneficial in community and elderly care settings. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that lower limb strengthening exercises have a positive impact on gait and balance ability, providing essential foundational data for improving physical health and quality of life in the elderly population.
