백우 이장녕의 고향은 독립기념관이 소재하고 있는 충남 천안군 목천읍이다. 목천읍은 이장녕 이외에도 이동녕이라는 걸출한 독립운동가를 배출한 곳이기도 하다. 이동녕은 이장녕의 삼종형이다. 하지만 이장녕에 대한 연구는 거의 없다. 그가 대한제국육군무관학교를 졸업하고 군대해산 이후 대가족을 이끌고 중국으로 망명한 사실도 잘 알려지지 않은 부분이다. 이장녕은 독립운동의 1.5세대라고 할 수 있다. 1880년대 초반에 출생해서 대한제국 육군무관학교를 거쳐 육군장교로 복무하다가 나라가 망해 가는 과정을 호국의 최첨병인 군대에서 목도하였다. 이장녕 가문은 1907년 11월 중국으로의 망명을 단행하였으며, 다음해 2월에 유하현에 정착했다. 이것은 신민회의 독립운동기지 건설에 따른 조처 일 수도 있지만 우당이나 석주 가문보다 약 3년 먼저 이주하였으며, 후일 김대락의 일기에서도 보이듯 후발 이주자들에게 선이주자로의 역할을 충실히 하였다는 점은 높이 평가받아야 한다. 뿐만 아니라 이장녕은 신흥무관학교 설립부터 관여하여 교관, 교장까지 역임하면서 독립군 배출에 전력을 다했다. 특히 그가 백산학교 교사였다는 점은 서간도지역에서의 활동범위가 얼마나 컸는지를 알 수 있는 중요한 대목이다. 1920년 청산리 대첩에서 승리의 주역이 김좌진과 홍범도라면 숨은 주역으로는 이장녕을 들 수 있다. 왜냐하면 서로군정서의 교관으로 있던 이장녕이 북로군정서에 파견되면서 두 단체의 긴밀한 관계가 더욱 돈독해 졌으며, 이것이 청산리 대첩에서 승리로 이어졌기 때문이다. 군인의 길을 계속 이어가던 이장녕은 정치가로 변신을 시도했다. 물론 독립운동단체를 조직하는 데 필요한 인적 자원의 수급 차원에서 이장녕은 군인과 정치가의 혼합형태를 취하고 있었다. 그가 어느 단체에서 활동하였든지, 군사참모장의 역할을 수행한 점에 비추어보면 무장으로서의 이장녕의 위치가 어느 정도였는지를 가늠할 수 있는 중요한 잣대라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Baegu Lee Jangnyeong was born in Mokcheon-eup Cheonan-gun Chungcheongnam-do, where the Korean Independence Hall was established. This is also the birthplace of Lee Dongnyeong who was his cousin and one of the greatest independent activists. Despite his achievement, there is few study of him. His various activities were not discovered including the fact that he graduated from the Military Academy of Great Han Empire and sought to asylum in China with his all family after the compulsory dissolution of the army. He can be the 1.5 generation of the Korean independent movement. He was born in the early 1880s, graduated from the Military Academy, became an military officer and witnessed the national ruin in the army. His family decided to take asylum in China in November, 1907 and settled in Yuahyeon in February, 1908. This movement could be caused by an action of Sinminhoe for the establishment of the base for its independent activity. However, his pre-movement and contribution to the post movement should be highly appreciated as he moved to China 3 years earlier than Udang family and Seokju family. Moreover, he was related to the Sinheung Military Academy since its foundation and devoted himself to train the independent army served as an instructor and principle. And the fact that he was a teacher in Baksan School shows an wide range of his activities in West Gando. The leading roles of the victory in Cheungsali Battle were Kim Jwajin and Hong Beumdo but, Lee Jangnyeong was a hidden force for the victory. While he was an instructor in Seurogunjeongseo and dispatched to Bukrogunjeongseo, he tried to strengthen the bond between the two armies and this led to the victory. He kept serving as an officer but was transformed himself into a politician. He was an officer and politician in a dimension of the supply of man power for independent movement. He always worked to be a staff officer wherever he took part in the independent armies and the fact would be an important standard to judge his great capacity as an officer.
