초록

There are few specific data concerning how many slaves there were in Sicily and what the slavery production system was like at the time the 1st Sicilian Slave Revolt broke out. This has made it difficult to determine the economic backgrounds and causes of the Slave Revolt. Diodoros suggests that slavery was extensively practiced in Sicily and that slaves were variously employed in wheat(grain) production, grazing, domestic service, etc. He cites as the causes of the 1st Sicilian Slave Revolt, the arrogance of slave owners, the harsh treatment of slaves, the plunder by ranch slaves, the absence of administration, etc. However, he failed to describe them in a logical manner. Both the harsh treatment of slaves and the plunder and self-indulgence of slaves cannot be rendered compatible in terms of slave control. Control of grazing slaves would be a matter of common interest to both slave owners and governors. In Sicily before the Slave Revolt, there was little cooperation between them, resulting in poor control of grazing slaves. The slaves who suffered unbearable mistreatment conspired to murder their masters and rise in revolt. They attempted to win the favor of God and elected Eunus as their leader. They had a clear purpose to achieve permanent freedom through a revolt. By the time the slaves captured Enna and Agrigentum, they established their own royal authority, imitated from that of the Hellenistic kingdoms, and issued coinage in the name of a king. The revolting slaves, who had been once free, organized themselves under the royal authority, elected their leader, and fought to gain permanent freedom. In order to absorb as many slaves as possible, they occupied many cities in Sicily. However, all their efforts to expand their influence and power failed.
