초록

Purpose: The present study investigated the impacts of stressful life events and elder's characteristics on quality of life (life satisfaction, depression, and self-rated health) among Korean oldest old. In particular, whether social support including informal support from children and formal support moderates the effect of stressful life events on quality of life was assessed. Methods: Purposive sampling was used to obtain 213 participants who were aged 85 and over. Face to face interviews were conducted by trained interviewers. Results: Greater amount of stress due to life events were related to lower life satisfaction and higher depression. The effect of stressful life events on depression was modified by both informal support and formal support, while that on life satisfaction was marginally moderated by informal support. Disability and chronic disease had significant effects on life satisfaction, depression, and self-rated health. Implications: Findings suggest that the oldest old who have experienced recently an accumulation of stressful life events should be regarded at a higher risk for mental health. Encouraging adult children to provide informal support to their very old parents, expanding and diversifying public efforts to provide more services to the oldest old are suggested to reduce negative impacts of stressful life events on certain aspects of quality of life. Making efforts to compensate for health related constraints are also suggested to enhance quality of life among the oldest old.
