경기도 초·중등 교사들의 다문화적 효능감에 대한 조사 연구

한국 사회의 인구학적 변화는 다문화적 시민교육이라는 교육적 과제를 발생시켰으며, 다문화교육의 여건이 미흡한 현실에서 학교 교육의 주체인 교사들의 역할이 중요해졌다. 본 연구에서는 국내에서 다문화가정 자녀가 가장 많이 거주하는 지역인 경기도 초·중등교사들의 다문화적 인식, 특히 다문화적 효능감을 조사하고 바람직한 다문화교육을 위한 시사점을 얻고자 조사 연구를 실시하였다. 교사효능감이란 학생들이 잘 배우도록 지도할 수 있다고 교사가 스스로 믿는 것이며, 다문화적 학급 환경에서 효과적으로 가르칠 수 있다는 자신감은 다문화교육을 위해 매우 중요한 교사의 특성이다. 본 연구의 대상은 2007년 8월에 경기도 소재 K대학교에서 직무연수를 받은 경기도지역 근무 교사들로서 초등교사가 68명, 중학교 국어과 교사가 109명, 고등학교 국어과 교사가 72명, 중·고등학교 일본어 교사가 43명 등 총 293명이었다. 분석 결과는 첫째, 전반적으로 교사의 다문화적 효능감의 수준은 낮게 나타났다. 응답 교사들의 절반 이상이 자신감을 나타낸 문항은 효능감 척도 14 문항 중 단 두 문항에 불과했다. 둘째, 타민족 집단에 대한 편견의 감소와 상호존중심 함양, 다양성의 존중, 협력 증진 등 인간관계 개선의 측면에서 상대적으로 높은 효능감 수준을 나타냈다. 셋째, 다문화가정 자녀들을 직접적으로 배려하고 도와주는 측면에서는 상대적으로 낮은 효능감을 나타냈다. 넷째, 다문화 교실에 적합한 학습 자료의 개발이나 수업 방법의 적용, 문화적 다양성으로 인해 발생하는 문제 해결의 측면에서는 극히 낮은 자신감을 나타냈다. 바람직한 다문화교육을 위한 교사교육과 교사재교육이 강화되어야하며, 특히 교사들의 다문화적 학급 환경에서의 수업 능력 제고가 시급히 필요하다.
Abstract
The purpose of this is to investigate multicultural efficacy of teachers in Gyeonggi Province of Korea. The sample for this study consists of 293 teachers(68 elementary school teachers, 109 middle school Korean language teachers, 72 high school Korean language teachers, and 43 Japanese language teachers). The result are as follows. First, overall levels of multicultural efficacy of teachers are low. They showed moderate level of efficacy on only two questions items out of 14 and low level of efficacy on all the other items. Second, the teachers showed relatively higher level of multicultural efficacy on the caring perspective items such as reduction of bias against other ethnic groups, mutual respect among different groups, respect for diversity, and strengthening of cooperation among diverse groups. Third, the teachers showed relatively lower level of efficacy for the question items regarding helping minority families and students directly. Fourth, the teachers showed extremely low level of efficacy for instructional competences such as providing instructional activities geared toward ethnic minorities and adapting instructional methods to meet the needs of students from diverse groups. For better multicultural education, enhancement of teacher efficacy is urgent. Specifically, there is strong need to develop instructional competences in multicultural school settings.
