Abstract

This study analyzes the influence of social studies teachers' background on their attitudes to economic education at secondary schools in Korea. We consider sex, age, career, city size, credit hours for economics, and undergraduate department as their background. To investigate the effects of these factors on economic education, we consider only social studies teachers' attitudes to economic education at secondary schools in Korea using the survey data in 2007. We found that the number of economics classes are significantly different according to teachers' majors at undergraduates. Most teachers with economics majors took at least three economics classes at undergraduates while most teachers with non-economics majors took one or two economics classes only. We also found that the teaching subjects are different according to teachers' majors at undergraduates. Teachers with economics majors tend to teach economics classes voluntarily, but those with non-economics majors tend to teach economics chapters of social studies classes during a process of distributing classes to meet obligatory time for teaching. We conjecture that teachers with non-economics majors teach economics-related classes less voluntarily as they achieve inadequate economic literacy for secondary economic classes due to insufficient credit hours for economics classes. On the contrary to the traditional thoughts that female teachers have a tendency to avoid teaching economic classes, we found that sexual status affects their attitude to teach social studies classes but not economics classes.
