Abstract
This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the labor experiences of immigrant young adults from blended families formed through international marriages, specifically those of the immigrant 1.5 generation. To achieve this, a qualitative case study method was employed, involving in-depth interviews with seven 1.5-generation immigrant young adults. The analysis resulted in the identification of five main themes and 16 subcategories. The five main themes are: ‘Pushed into responsible labor’, ‘Working in isolation within their own world’, ‘Caught in a wheel of unstable labor’, ‘Not being recognized’, and ‘Learning survival methods on their own’. It was found that 1.5 generation immigrant young adults are compelled to enter the Korean labor market to take responsibility for themselves and their families, experiencing isolation and instability, while feeling unrecognized within the labor market. Nevertheless, these youth demonstrate a strong determination to learn survival methods on their own. Based on these findings, the study proposes social welfare implications to support the integration of 1.5-generation immigrant young adults from blended families formed through international marriages. as members of Korean society.
