본 연구는 성인진입기 남성 청년의 도박중독 및 회복 경험을 심층적으로 탐색하였다. 이에 도박중독 문제를 갖고 있는 13명의 성인진입기 남성 청년을 대상으로 심층 면담을 실시하였다. 분석은 근거이론을 기반으로 개방 코딩, 축 코딩, 선택 코딩, 유형분석, 패러다임 모형 구축을 수행하였고, 50개의 개념, 18개의 하위범주, 6개의 범주가 도출되었다. ‘도박을 시작한 계기와 통로’라는 인과적 조건과 ‘중독으로 이어진 도박 참여’의 맥락적 조건을 통해 나타난 성인진입기 남성 청년들의 중심 현상은 ‘도박중독으로 인해 망가진 삶’이었다. ‘중독 인지와 회복에 대한 열망’의 중재적 조건과 ‘회복을 위한 환경 조성’의 작용/상호작용 전략을 통해 궁극적으로 ‘회복으로 가는 점진적 도약’의 결과를 가져왔다. 이들의 경험은 ‘도박 지속형’, ‘회복 지향형’, ‘회복 유지형’의 유형으로 분석되었고, ‘도박중독의 폐해를 수용하고 점진적 회복을 열망하기’라는 핵심 범주를 통해 설명될 수 있었다. 본 연구는 성인진입기 남성 청년의 도박 참여 동기와 중독으로 인한 어려움뿐 아니라 도박 문제의 심화 및 회복과 관련한 복합적인 맥락과 조건 및 유형적 특성을 이해함으로써 이들의 회복을 지원하기 위한 구체적인 서비스 개발 방안을 제언하였다.
Abstract
This study explored the in-depth experiences of gambling addiction and recovery among emerging adult men. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 men entering adulthood with gambling addiction problems. Analysis was conducted using open coding, axial coding, selective coding, type analysis, and paradigm model construction based on the grounded theory approach, yielding 50 concepts, 18 subcategories, and 6 categories. The central phenomenon of gambling addition among emerging adult men, which appeared through the causal condition of “the trigger and passage of starting gambling” and the contextual condition of “participation in gambling leading to addiction,” was “a life broken by gambling addiction.” The intervening conditions of “addiction awareness and desire for recovery” and the action/ interaction strategy of “creating an environment for recovery”resulted in a “gradual leap to recovery.” Their experiences were categorized as “persistent gambling,” “recovery oriented,” and “recovery maintenance” and were explained by the core categories of ‘acknowledging the detrimental impacts of gambling addiction” and “committing to a gradual path of recovery.” The findings can inform the development of support services for recovery by understanding the complex context, conditions, and characteristics related to the deterioration into and recovery from gambling problems, alongside the challenges and motivations of addiction among emerging adult men.
