본 연구는 메타문화기술지 방법론을 활용하여 남성 도박중독자의 회복 경험에 관한 질적 연구들을 종합하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 도박자의 회복에 관한 질적 연구는 점차 증가하고 있으나, 남성 도박자의 회복 과정은 충분히 탐색되지 않았으며, 젠더와 관련된 논의 또한 제한적이다. 이에 따라 총 9편의 질적 연구를 선정하고, Noblit과 Hare(1988)가 제안한 메타문화기술지 방법론에 따라 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 세 가지 종합 주제와 23개의 서술적 주제가 도출되었다. 이들 주제는 단도박의 시작과 유지에 영향을 미치는 심리적, 관계적, 사회적 요인들, 재발 방지 및 회복 촉진을 위한 전략, 회복 과정에서 나타나는 성과, 그리고 자아 정체성 변화가 서로 복합적으로 상호작용하는 과정을 보여준다. 본 연구는 젠더와 도박중독에 관한 서구 문헌을 바탕으로, 젠더 규범과 관계적 역동이 남성 도박자의 회복 경로에 미치는 영향을 논의하였다. 아울러 젠더 기반 개입의 필요성을 강조하며, 향후 도박중독 회복에 관한 연구와 실천에서 젠더 관점을 통합할 필요성을 제시하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to synthesize qualitative research on the recovery experiences of male gambling addicts using a meta-ethnographic approach. While qualitative research on gambling recovery has increased, the recovery process of male gamblers remains underexplored, and limited attention has been paid to the relevance of gender. To address this gap, nine qualitative studies were selected and analyzed using the methodology proposed by Noblit and Hare (1988). The analysis yielded three overarching synthetic themes - “voluntary commitment to gambling abstinence,” “efforts to restore functionality and stability,” and “proactive life reconstruction” - that encompass 23 descriptive themes. These themes describe the complex interplay of psychological, relational, and social factors that influence the initiation and maintenance of abstinence, strategies to prevent relapse and promote recovery, process outcomes, and the transformation of self-identity during the recovery process. While the included studies did not examine gender in gambling recovery the findings drawn exclusively from male participants highlight the need for a gender perspective in understanding gambling recovery. Drawing on findings from Western literature, this study discusses how gender norms and dynamics may shape recovery trajectories of Korean male gambling addicts. These findings emphasize the importance of developing gender-sensitive interventions and the value of incorporating a gender lens into future research and practices on gambling addiction recovery.
