Abstract

Young adults avoid marriage in contemporary South Korea. Existing analyses and policies regarding the phenomenon interpret the difficulties surrounding marriage as the causes of non-marriage and aim to resolve them. This study explores the meanings and lifestyle choices about marriage among young adults while they cope with an unstable society. In-depth interviews were conducted with 14 young adults who decided to stay unmarried, and Strauss’s paradigm model was used for analysis. The findings show that young adults are confused with the institutional and romantic meanings of marriage and perceive their lives as unstable in every way. As a result, they adopt a “stability-seeking” tendency, viewing marriage as another source of instability in life. Materialistic and career-centered value system, as well as resistance to patriarchy were found among young adults, and they were influenced by life models of marriage and non-marriage from media and real life. Marriage was evaluated in polarized ways, and as young adults sought to eliminate instability from their lives, marriage was also excluded. Consequently, the component meanings of marriage were more securely achieved in an unmarried life, and the unmarried lifestyle replaced marriage as a social institution.
