Abstract
This article investigated the effects of high school students' benevolent sexism (BS) on their cross-gender behaviour type. More specifically, this study examined two issues. Firstly, does BS affect cross-gender helping style? Secondly, does BS predict respondents to accept male's protectively justified prohibitions against female's behaviour? The present research found that BS tends to increase male students to offer female students dependency-oriented help, rather than autonomy-oriented help or no help. The endorsement of BS predicted female students to prefer dependency-oriented help rather than autonomy coping, too. In addition, the higher the respondents support BS, the more they agreed with the male's protectively justified restrictions on female's experience regarding their job or everyday life, regardless of the dangerous degree of the situation. The same trend appeared not only in the romantic context but also in the occupational context. Based upon the above findings, the study identified that what BS offers high school girls is not autonomous coping but dependency-oriented help. When BS says men protect women, what it meant is that women accept men's protectively justified prohibitions. Therefore students should be taught girls should conquer BS' offering chivalry-gentlemen should protect as well as help women- for their own self-guided independent challenging life.
