Abstract
This article (N = 525) investigated the effects of highschool girls' benevolent sexism(BS) on their appearance management. This study found that highschool girls who endorsed BS reported higher levels of disposition toward beauty ideals, self-objectification, appearance management, body surveillance, and body shaming, but no more items of cosmetics than considered for a romantic date. Based upon this study’s findings, it is apparent that BS of highschool girls place greater emphasis on the outward appearance rather than the functionality of their bodies. BS promises beautiful and attractive women can achieve able men like a prince in fairly tale where he would provide her with enormous level of protection and support. This promise of social rewards inherent in BS partly motivates girls to keep the appearance-enhancing behaviors. Highschool girls’ chronic focus on appearance could prohibit or limit them from developing competence needed to occupy better social positions. Worse yet, they might lose mental and physical health. Therefore, it is imperative that social studies has to teach the mechanism of BS and appearance management as well as what BS is. It has to practice programmes aimed at eliminating BS associated for healthier beauty ideals. The task of social studies to transform highschool girls’ main concern from competence in BS style to social competence is never a minor one. This task means not only that highschool girls to increase their self-control capacity at a micro level but also our own society to achieve gender equality at a macro level.
