Abstract
This article investigates the actual conditions of benevolent sexism(BS) among 578 highschool students. This study finds that respondents tend to be benevolent sexists and that BS functions as sexism. While hostile sexism(HS) seems to punish women whose jobs do not uphold traditional female roles, BS tend to reward women whose jobs embrace female stereotypes. In spite of theses facts, participants are likely to feel that BS is not sexism. They may feel BS even friendly. Overall, they disapprove of HS while approving of BS. It means that respondents tend to be equivocal egalitarians. If I divide samples according to gender and analyze their responses, I can find gender differences regarding ambivalent sexism. The most impressive findings are many of male students are explicitly equivocal egalitarians but look to be implicitly hostile sexists. On the other hand, female participants seem to be explicitly egalitarians but implicitly benevolent sexists on the average. Based upon the above findings, this study suggests that students should be taught "why BS is sexism" as well as negative points of HS in order that they can conquer ambivalent sexism.
