매개 접촉을 활용한 청소년의 연령차별주의 개선 연구

초록

본 연구는 청소년의 연령차별주의에 주목하고, 개선 방안으로 간접 접촉 방식 중의 하나인 매개 접촉을 제안하였다. 그리고 매개 접촉을 활용한 사회과 수업이 청소년의 연령차별주의 개선에 가지는 효과를 검증하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2개 고등학교에서 1학년을 대상으로 처치집단과 비교집단으로 나누어 실험을 실시하였다. 실험은 사전검사, 2차시의 사회과 수업, 사후검사 순으로 진행되었다. 처치집단은 매개 접촉을 활용한 사회과 수업을, 비교집단은 강의 위주의 사회과 수업을 제공하였다. 연구 결과 매개 접촉 활용 사회과 수업은 연령차별주의의 인지적, 정의적, 행동적 측면 전반에 걸쳐 유의미한 긍정적인 변화를 가져왔다. 한편, 강의 위주 사회과 수업 역시 연령차별주의의 인지적 측면에서 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 교사가 노인에 대한 우리 사회의 잘못된 인식이나 고정관념의 문제점을 설명하는 것만으로도 노인에 대한 부정적 고정관념을 감소시키는 데 효과가 있음을 시사한다. 그러나 강의 위주의 사회과 수업은 연령차별주의의 정의적 측면이나 행동적 측면의 개선에 있어서는 유의미한 효과가 나타나지 않았다. 따라서 정의적 측면과 행동적 측면에서의 노인에 대한 청소년들의 태도 개선을 위해서는 강의 위주 수업보다는 미디어를 통해 노인들과의 긍정적 접촉을 제공하는 것이 보다 효과적임을 알 수 있다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of mediated intergroup contact interventions in social studies classes on ageism in adolescents. For this purpose, quasi-experiment research was designed for the first-year students in two high schools. Experiments were conducted in the order of pre-test, two social studies classes, and post-test. Students in an experimental group received social studies classes about population aging using mediated contact with older adults, while students in a control group received lecture-oriented social studies classes not using mediated contact. The findings were as follows: mediated intergroup contact interventions in social studies classes brought about significant positive changes throughout the cognitive, affective and behavioral components of ageism. In particular, mediated intergroup contact intervention in social studies classes had a statistically significant advantage at p<.001 level in affective and behavioral components of ageism in comparison with the lecture-oriented classes. Meanwhile, lecture-oriented social studies classes have also shown to be effective in reducing adolescents' negative stereotypes about older adults. Explaining the problems of our society's misconceptions or stereotypes about older adults has been effective in reducing negative stereotypes about older and elderly people. This suggests that ageism should be included in major learning content elements of social studies curriculum.
