수도권 중･고등학생들의 연령차별주의와 영향 요인

초록

본 연구는 청소년들의 연령차별주의 실태와 영향 요인을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울특별시 및 경기도 소재 4개 중․고등학교 2학년 학생 총 486명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 중․고등학생들은 평균적으로 낮은 연령차별주의를 가지고 있었다. 그러나 중학생의 8.2%, 고등학생의 17.8%는 비교적 높은 연령차별적 태도를 보였다. 둘째, 개인 변인 측면에서 중학생보다 고등학생이, 노인․노화 관련 지식이 적을수록, 노화 불안이 높을수록 연령차별주의가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 노인과의 접촉 경험변인 중에서 노인 대상 봉사활동 경험이 있을수록, 노인과의 직접 접촉 친밀도가 높을수록, 긍정적 미디어 접촉이 많을수록, 부정적 미디어 접촉이 적을수록 청소년의 연령차별주의가 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 청소년들이 노인 세대를 위협적이라고 인식할수록 연령차별주의가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 청소년의 연령차별주의 개선에 있어서 다음과 같은 시사점을 제공한다. 먼저, 노인에 대해 부정적 태도가 증가하는 고등학교 이전에 교육적 개입을 통해 노인 및 노화와 관련된 정확한 이해를 도모하고, 노화에 대한 막연한 불안감을 해소시켜 줄 필요가 있다. 다음으로, 노인 대상 봉사활동 경험, 노인과의 직접 접촉의 질 제고, 미디어를 통한 노인과의 긍정적 접촉 경험 제공이 필요하다. 마지막으로, 청소년의 연령차별을 이해하기 위해서는 청․장년세대와 노인세대 간의 관계적 속성 역시 고려해야 한다.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the actual condition of ageism in adolescents and examine factors affecting it. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on a total of 486 second-year students from four middle and high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. As a result, first, middle and high school students had low ageism. However, 8.2% of middle school students and 17.8% of high school students showed relatively high ageist attitude. Second, in terms of individual variables, ageism of adolescents was higher in the high school students, the less knowledge related to aging, and the higher the aging anxiety. Third, among the variables of contact experiences with the elderly, ageism in adolescents was lower as the volunteer experiences with the elderly, the higher the direct contact intimacy with the elderly, the more positive media contacts, and the less negative media contacts. Fourth, ageism in adolescents was higher when adolescents perceived the elderly as a threat. The results of this study provide the following implications for improving ageism in adolescents. First, it is necessary to improve the understanding of the elderly and aging and to relieve vague anxiety about aging through educational interventions before high school, where the negative attitude toward the elderly increases. Next, it is necessary to provide volunteer experiences, improve the quality of direct contact with the elderly, and provide positive contact experiences with the elderly through the media. Lastly, in order to understand ageism in adolescents, the relational attributes between the young and the old generation should also be considered.
