중학교 사회 교과서에서 다루어지는 자아 정체성에 대한 비판적 연구

초록

우리나라 초·중등학교 국가 교육과정 및 사회과 교육과정에서는 자아 정체성 확립을 중요한 교육 목표 중 하나로 언급하고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사회과교육 내에서 이에 대한 논의는 충분하게 이루어지지 못했다. 이러한 문제의식에 따라 본 연구는 사회과교육에서 자아 정체성의 ‘어떠한’ 내용을, ‘어떻게’ 다루어야 할 것인가에 대한 방향을 탐색하고자 하였다. 자아 정체성을 설명하는 세 가지 이론인 일반 정체성 이론(identity theory), 사회 정체성 이론(social identity theory), 개인 정체성 이론(personal identity)을 살펴본 후, 세 이론의 관점에서 2015 개정 사회과 교육과정을 바탕으로 집필된 중학교 사회 교과서의 자아 정체성 관련 내용을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 교육과정 및 교과서에서 자아 정체성은 포괄적이고, 비구체적으로 서술되어 있으며, 미래의 역할 탐색을 강조하고 사회 정체성 관련 내용은 제외되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 자아 정체성과 관련하여 거울자아 이론이 빈번하게 사용되고 있음을 확인하였다. 본 연구는 청소년들의 자아 정체성 발달과 확립을 돕기 위해 사회과교육에서 자아 정체성의 다양하고 통합적인 관점을 반영하며, 보다 심화된 논의가 필요함을 강조한다.

Abstract

The development of self-identity is one of the most important goals in the national and social studies curriculum of South Korea. However, the concept remains understudied in the field of social studies education. Aiming to encourage rigorous discussion for content selection regarding self-identity, this study critically analyzed eight middle school social studies textbooks used in South Korea. Three different identity theories of psychology and sociology―identity theory, social identity theory, and personal identity theory―were used as the theoretical framework for the analysis. The analysis revealed that the textbooks were not able to provide concrete definition or even properly introduce the elements of the concept of self-identity. While emphasizing on the exploration of students’ future roles, the textbooks overlooked the perspective of developing a social identity, hindering the evolvement of a comprehensive viewpoint of self-identity. The theory of looking-glass-self was frequently mentioned in the textbooks, but there is a potential risk of building a false understanding of the alluded concept. This study suggests the concept and theories concerning self-identity in social studies textbooks must be critically examined and reconstructed to provide students with opportunities to holistically explore and comprehensively develop their own self-identity.
