Abstract
The purposes of this study are to validate the physical self-concept scale for adolescent developed by Choi, et al. (2005) using strong validation program suggested by Benson(1998), and to suggest the directions for modification based on the findings. The Physical self-concept for adolescent questionnaire was administered to 289 middle school students. The confirmatory factor analysis(CFA), G-theory and multi-group analysis were applied within structural stage and external stage. An additional physical self-concept of 295 highschool students were measured for multi-group analysis. In the results of CFA, the sample data of our study did not fitted well to the theoretical structure suggested by Choi, et al. (2005). In the G-study, the variance of interaction between the subjects and factors (30.90%) and residual variance (33.60%) were the highest. The most reliable and efficient measurement scale based on the G-theory is 12-factors, 4-item model. The finding from multi-group analysis suggested that the theoretical structure developed upon the sample from middle school students cannot be applied equally to the sample of highschool students. It is discussed that the theoretical structure of physical self-concept for adolescent developed by Choi, et al. (2005) may not fully reflect the overall concept of physical self-concept since it contains some problematic items and factors. It is suggested that a new measurement scale should be developed under careful and systematic procedures. In addition, the results from D-study is expected to be a useful reference for future study in terms of enhancing the reliability and validity of theoretical structure of physical self-concept.
