Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare physical activity(PA) levels of students during physical education(PE) class and lunch period. The seventh-grade students(N=40) were observed in handball unit PE classes and also observed at lunch periods. The System for Observing Fitness Instructional Time (SOFIT) was used for observing students' PA levels. Inter-observer reliability was exceed 85% for all categories. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and ANOVA. Results of the study showed that dominant patterns of students' PA levels in PE were standing followed by walking and very active. PA levels were different as students took more lessons. With respect to the contents of the lesson, skill practice was most prevailing, followed by game play and general content. The most common teacher behavior was instruction, followed by demonstration and management. Differences in PA levels during PE classes were associated with both lesson context and teacher behavior. Also, the results revealed that students spent more time in sitting during lunch period, followed by standing and walking. Gender differences were found in the level of PA at lunch period in which boys spent more time in walking but many girls in sitting. In relation to the level of MVPA of students during PE classes and lunch period, students were more active in PE classes than lunch period. Also, findings of this study showed male students spent more energy than female students both in PE classes and at lunch period. Implications were discussed to boost up students' PA in school.
