사회과 교사의 NIE 활용 방해요인에 대한 인식

이 연구는 사회과 교사들이 어떤 점들을 NIE 활용의 방해요인으로 인식하고 있는지 밝혀내기 위해 수행되었다. NIE는 사회과의 성격에 적합하고, 학습 효과 면에서 긍정적인 성과를 보여주고 있다는 증거에도 불구하고, 실제로 사회과 수업에서 NIE가 활발하게 활용되고 있다고 보기 힘들다. 이 연구에서는 이런 문제의식을 갖고 사회과 교사들이 실제로 인식하고 있는 NIE 활용의 방해요인에 대해 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위하여 질문지 조사가 수행되었고, 간단한 통계적 분석이 실시되었다. 분석 결과, 구체적으로 진도상의 문제, 잡무부담, 짧은 수업시간 등이 주요 방해요인으로 인식되고 있었으며, 사회과 교사의 45.5%는 학습 환경과 교사의 태도를 가장 큰 방해요인으로 지적하였다. 이런 인식 결과들은 사회과 교사들의 특성(성별, 학교급, 연령, 교직 경력, 최종 학력, 교원단체 가입여부, NIE 활용 의사, NIE 활용 경험)의 차원에서도 분석되었다. 또한 이런 분석 결과가 NIE를 활성화하기 위해 주는 몇 가지 시사점에 대해서도 논의되었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine what prevented Korean social studies teachers from using the instructional model of "Newspaper In Education”(NIE, hereafter) in their classrooms. Although NIE seems to be appropriate for the nature of social studies education, and other relevant studies have demonstrated positive effects on students' learning and achievement, it is hard to say that NIE is actively utilized in most of Korean social studies classrooms. Based on this status quo, this study investigated how Korean social studies teachers considered as the factors that might discourage them to use the instructional model of NIE. The data was collected from a survey of 222 secondary social studies teachers. The researchers analyzed these data by conducting descriptive statistics, crosstabulations, chi-square testing, and fisher's exact testing. The findings showed that excessive curricular contents, burden of administrative work, and a short amount of class hour per week were the most significant barriers that hindererd social studies teachers' use of NIE. Approximately 45.5% of the respondents indicated that learning environments and teachers' attitudes kept them away from incorporating NIE into their lessons. These results were analyzed respectively by gender, level of schools, age, a number of years in teaching, educational background, membership of teachers' association, teachers' intention for NIE, and experience of NIE. The implications of the findings were also discussed for the desirables of social studies education.
