Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of percent body fat (%Fat) estimation by two-compartment hydrostatic weighing. A three-compartment model of body composition corrected for the mineral mass served as the criterion measurement of %Fat. Comparison of the Siri two-compartment model with the three-compartment model revealed that the correlation scores r=0.975~0.930 for all subject group and groups by separating gender and age and 95% confidence intervals associated with the Bland-Altman analysis ranged from -0.86 to 8.26% Fat. The results showed that in comparison of the two-compartment hydrostatic weighing with criterion method there is strong correlation but the two-compartment model is influenced on change of mineral mass, systematically overestimating %Fat. These data suggest that the use of the two techniques should be viewed with caution. In the future, we need to investigate the proportion of protein, TBW, mineral in FFM in vivo.
