Abstract

For some time, gifted education has faced criticism that it is only for a small number of elite students. In recent years, however, gifted education has progressed in the direction of respecting the various abilities of all students. According to the 3rd Master Plan for the Promotion of Gifted Education (2013-2017), South Korea has established the “expansion of opportunities for gifted and talented education” as a policy goal, thus seeking to diversify the fields of gifted education. With the basic position that gifted education centering on the natural sciences and mathematics is to be expanded into the spheres of the humanities and social sciences, the so-called “gifted education in the humanities and social sciences” has been actively attempted; however, research on it is rare. Moreover, it is difficult to find studies on what kinds of students are selected as the gifted in the humanities and social sciences. Consequently, the present study sought to find answers to the questions “What kind of students are the gifted in the humanities and social sciences?” by examining the characteristics of students selected as the gifted in the humanities and social sciences and by analyzing the characteristics of the gifted in the humanities and social sciences differing from those of the gifted in other fields and the shared goals of social studies education and gifted education in the humanities and social sciences. Through this, the present study sought to analyze and interpret the limitations and tasks of gifted education in the humanities and social sciences, thus searching for the desirable direction of gifted education in the humanities and social sciences. The characteristics of the gifted in the humanities and social sciences observed among the students selected could be classified into five: motivations, creativity, intellectual ability, leadership, and specific academic aptitudes. The fact that while human values are not explored in the natural sciences and mathematics, they are explored in the humanities and social sciences can be seen as a “domain specificity” of the latter fields. From the perspective of such “domain specificity,” it was possible to confirm that social studies education, whose ultimate goal lies in the cultivation of citizenship, forms the heart of gifted education in the humanities and social sciences. However, the fact that not all students selected for gifted education centers in the humanities and social sciences possessed the characteristics of the gifted in the humanities and social sciences must be corrected. In the future, longitudinal studies on graduates of gifted education centers in the humanities and social sciences must be conducted. Students who have experienced gifted education in the humanities and social sciences must be observed continuously to determine the ways in which they grow up and remember and evaluate their experiences at gifted education centers in the humanities and social sciences. By doing so, it will be possible to reconsider gifted education in the humanities and social sciences fundamentally and radically.
