Abstract

Physical inactivity and related diseases are of global public health concern. Early research into the determinants of physical activity typically focused on individual demographic and psychological factors, such as age, sex, motivation, attitudes, and self-efficacy. These factors are important attributes of the social ecological theory on which much of our understanding of physical activity behavior is based. The life-course perspective has been introduced as a temporal research perspective that can potentially help in understanding physical activity behaviors over the lifespan. This paper illustrates how a life-course perspective can be infused more fully into the research field of physical activity promotion. The first section summarizes this approach into main key life-course principles including human agency, linked lives, time and place and timing. The second section takes a close look at basic components: trajectories, transitions, and turning points. The final section highlights some of the implications of a life-course perspective for research methods and interventions.
