Abstract

As cultural diversity, in terms of such factors as race, ethnicity, language, religion, and sexual identification, continues to grow, the number of studies on communities and individuals with diverse cultural backgrounds has been increasing in South Korea. Considering these changes in a multicultural society, this study aims to explore methodological ways to improve research on individuals and communities with cultural diversity in both qualitative and quantitative ways. The study introduces the concept, history, and characteristics of “culturally sensitive research (CSR)”, which has been discussed and developed in the late 1990s in the United States. CSR centers ‘culture’ in the entire course of the research. It adopts culturally relevant research methods, uses culturally specific knowledge of the participants and their cultural group members, and resists mainstream cultural paradigms that marginalize their knowledge and experiences. It analyzes and interprets data in a culturally sensitive way, produces theories and practices with culturally rich information, and shares it with cultural communities. The characteristics of CSR permeate into each stage of research. Throughout the whole process, CSR researchers engage in ongoing reflection and research on themselves and their cultures. This study discusses how the idea of CSR can be applied to the process of educational research in South Korea. It also provides recommendations to develop Korean researchers’ competence in performing CSR and advance methodological approaches in multicultural education.
