스포츠 승부조작의 탐지 가능성 : 스포츠 데이터에 나타나는 벤포드의 법칙

초록

이 연구의 목적은 데이터의 조작과 사기, 부정행위 등을 탐지하는데 활용되고 있는 벤포드 법칙(Benford`s law)을 적용하여 스포츠 승부조작의 탐지 가능성을 확인하는 것이다. 이 연구의 목적을 위해 첫째, 스포츠 데이터와 벤포드 법칙의 관계를 확인하였다. 5개 종목(야구, 배구, 태권도, 배드민턴, 하키) 32개 변인에 따른 전체 102,384개 데이터를 적용하여 벤포드 법칙과의 관계를 확인했으며, 스포츠 분야에서 벤포드 법칙을 활용하기 위한 유용한 데이터의 특징을 확인하였다. 둘째, 배드민턴 종목을 예제로 스포츠 승부조작의 탐지 가능성을 확인하였다. 배드민턴 649경기에서 산출된 경기별 랠리(rallies) 데이터를 기반으로 벤포드 법칙과의 관계를 확인하였으며, 승부조작 사례와 일반(경쟁)적인 경기에서 나타나는 벤포드 법칙의 분포를 비교하였다. 셋째, 스포츠 승부조작 탐지를 위한 벤포드 법칙의 방법론적 제약과 향후 연구방안에 대해 알아보았다. 이 연구의 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 벤포드 법칙은 다양한 스포츠 데이터에 활용 가능할 것이다. 둘째, 벤포드 법칙은 스포츠 분야에서의 데이터 조작과 사기, 부정행위를 탐지하기 위한 도구로 활용 가능할 것이다. 셋째, 벤포드 법칙을 적용한 스포츠 승부조작의 탐지는 가능할 것으로 판단된다. 반면 벤포드 법칙은 승부조작을 탐지하기 위한 절대적 도구는 아니기 때문에 스포츠 경기와 관련된 다양한 내⦁외적변인들의 활용과 통계적 분석기법의 적용이 함께 요구된다. 이 연구의 결과를 기반으로 스포츠 승부조작을 탐지하기 위한 후속연구가 다양하게 진행되기를 기대한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to verify the possibility of detecting match-fixing in sports by utilizing Benford's law. To achieve the purpose, first, the correlation between the sports data and Benford's law were identified. A total of 102384 data under 32 variables in 5 kinds of sports as baseball, volleyball, Taekwondo, badminton, hockey were analyzed and the efficient characteristics of sports data to apply Benford's law were selected. Second, badminton was taken as an example to ascertain the possibility of identifying match-fixing. Based on the rally data of 649 badminton games, Benford's law in fixed games and that of general competitions were compared. Third, the specific methodology, the answer tree analysis was used to detect sports match-fixing applying Benford's Law. It was verified that the statistical categorization(x2) of Benford's law could be affected by internal variables of the games. The results of the study were as follows: Benford's law can be utilized in a variety of sports data. Second, Benford's law can be used as a tool to detect the manipulation of data and to detect match-fixing. Third, the study confirmed that by using Benford's law, the detection of sports match-fixing is possible. It is expected that further studies proceed to detect match-fixing on the basis of this study.
