Abstract

What is the association between aging and performance in experienced marathoners? This study explored 98 male and 7 female Korean 100 Marathon Clubbers’ age-related decline and record plateau according to their sex and performance levels. The most experienced runners among male and females finished 892 and 365 marathon races, respectively. The results of this pioneering research are as follows. First, age-related and consistent decline in record improvement was observed from the early 40’s, but there was no significant sex difference. Second, the age-group of 45-55 showed the least record improvement, suggesting that the 100 Marathon Clubbers’ reached a plateau in their middle ages. Third, the sex difference in the 100 Marathon Clubbers’ record change was insignificant during and after the middle 50’s. Forth, the 100 Marathon Clubbers in the highest lifetime record group showed significantly greater record decline compared to their counterparts in the poorest record group. Factors associated with age-related record change in the 100 Marathon Clubbers may be different from the less experienced counterparts. The findings from this study, therefore, should be applied with caution for beginners or intermediate runners when planning races and setting record goals.
