Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze trajectories in research on citizenship and suggest directions for citizenship studies in social studies education. By Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), the abstracts of 1,568 articles, collected from the Korean Citation Index (KCI), are analyzed. As a finding, six topics are identified in the individual fields. In the field of studies related to citizenship, the topics are included as follows: the formation of citizenship reflecting historical and geographical contexts; the influence and limitations of postcolonialism on citizenship; the necessity of global citizenship centered on stakeholders; effectiveness analysis of citizenship-based psychological and educational programs; citizenship development by community engagement; and the exploration of citizenship in relation to the interpellation of various groups as subjects. In the field of social studies education, the topics are identified as follows: the exploration of citizenship education by studying various communities; the pursuit of inclusive citizenship reflecting multicultural phenomena; the search for alternative citizenship to overcome individual-centered notions; the redefinition of goals and teaching methods in the field of social studies education; the development and application of citizenship measurement scales and analyses of instructional effectiveness; and the analyses of curricula and textbooks related to citizenship. In conclusion, this study suggests that postcolonial perspectives can enrich citizenship education.
