Abstract

Despite its significance in the history of philosophy, understandings and assessments of the HuXiang school’s doctrines of Introspection and Inner cultivation remain divided, and in particular, the school’s notion of Inner cultivation has received little attention. Focusing on issues of practical self-cultivation, this study seeks to clarify the original intent of the HuXiang school with regard to the practice of Introspection and Inner cultivation. Since the HuXiang school left no systematic exposition of its own views and was primarily recorded through the criticisms of Zhu Xi, this paper distinguishes between the school’s original aims and the actual tendencies that prompted Zhu Xi’s objections. On this basis, it reexamines Zhu Xi’s critiques and, using them as a reflective lens, reconstructs the structural logic of the HuXiang school’s theory of self-cultivation. With regard to Introspection cultivation, members of the HuXiang school did not regard the fundamental principle as an object of cognitive knowledge, nor did they understand such knowing as the ultimate goal of cultivation. Rather, Introspection cultivation is significant because it enables one to consciously apprehend the manifestation of one’s innate moral conscience (liangzhi) and thereby take it as an opportunity to enact goodness. This intention becomes clear when Inner cultivation is considered alongside it. The objects of Inner cultivation are the sprouts of conscience and the fundamental principle that allows these sprouts to emerge; its process is necessarily connected to “practicing benevolence (爲仁).” Both Hu Hong and Zhang Shi explained this through Mencius’s notion of expansion (擴充), arguing that only through expansion can one attain the state of “becoming like Heaven and Earth,” “realizing the great substance of benevolence,” “exhausting one’s nature and mandate,” and “unendingly fulfilling benevolence and righteousness.” However, in actual practice, Introspection cultivation tended toward introspecting particular thoughts and tracing their roots. As a result, contrary to the school’s original emphasis on active inquiry and moral practice, cultivation came to sink into inward contemplation. The absence of Inner cultivation and concrete practice ultimately led to the criticism that Introspection failed to contribute to genuine moral action.
