Abstract
This study examines the chapter-dividing systems (分章節) of the Confucian classic Zhongyong as interpreted by three late Joseon scholars: Yun Hyu, Park Sedang, and Jeong Jedu. By analyzing their respective structures and philosophical emphases, the paper explores the intellectual significance and historical implications of their approaches. Each scholar reinterpreted Zhongyong beyond the metaphysical framework of Neo-Confucianism, reshaping it according to their philosophical stance and the pressing concerns of their time. In doing so, they expanded the diversity and practical applicability of Confucian thought in late Joseon Korea. Yun Hyu understood Zhongyong through the dual structure of “the way of serving Heaven” (事天之道) and “the affairs embodying the Way” (體道之事), emphasizing human awareness and practice as the path to realizing Heaven’s mandate. He divided the text into ten chapters, viewing the first as a study of sagehood (聖學), thereby highlighting its practical philosophical dimension. Park Sedang regarded Zhongyong as a manual for ethical practice, reorganizing it into five major sections and twenty chapters. He prioritized textual clarity and reader comprehension, stressing filial piety and rejecting metaphysical interpretations to offer concrete methods for applying the text to daily life. Jeong Jedu divided the text into upper and lower volumes with seven chapters, focusing on the principle of sincerity (誠之) and integrating mind, nature, and Heaven into a unified moral framework centered on human agency. Their chapter-dividing systems represent more than structural reorganization—they exemplify the potential for diverse and practice-oriented Confucianism. By reinterpreting Zhongyong as a philosophy of action, they sought to transform Confucianism into a tool for addressing moral crises and social disorder. Their emphasis on human awareness and moral effort as the means to attain Heaven’s mandate affirms a proactive and ethical view of humanity. Although criticized as heretical (斯文亂賊) at the time, their efforts marked a turning point in Joseon Confucian scholarship, laying the groundwork for later developments in Yangming and Practical Learning. This study demonstrates that scholarship is not merely the inheritance of the past, but a creative and practical endeavor to interpret the present and shape the future.
