Abstract
This paper critiques Mou, Zong-san's interpretation of Cheng Yi Philosophy. Mou, Zong-san lumps Jeong-i with Zhu Xi, classifying it as a collateral branch of Neo-Confucianism, and criticizes it for deviating from orthodox scholarship. He argues that Cheng Yi was the budding scholar, and that Zhu Xi inherited and nurtured it. Mou, Zong-san believes that Cheng Yi sought to grasp the transcendental principle with a realistic mind, but that this principle was inactive and therefore uncreative. He argues that Cheng Yi's method of study, rather than seeking the middle from the wei-fa(未發), sought the middle from yi-fa(已發). He also advocates for the study of things and the study of jing(敬), but these are merely acquired studies aimed at grasping the principle. This system of the unity of mind and nature is consistent with Zhu Xi's, but differs from Cheng Hao of Wondongyo, who advocated the unity of mind and nature. In my view, Mou, Zong-san's argument presents several problems. First, Cheng Yi exhibits evidence of Cheng Hao's similar thinking. These are discussions on the unity of mind and principle, substance and function as one source, and study priciple-realize nature-reach fate is one step. Mou, Zong-san claims that these discussions do not fit his system, and rather ignores or distorts them. Second, in my view, what Mou, Zong-san means by factual refers to the Common principles(俗諦) as seen by specific people in real society. The theory that separates from specific people pursues refreshingness, but is easily empty. Refreshingness and emptiness come from the self-cultivation studies of Buddhism and Taoism. Mou, Zong-san argues that the interpretation of the concepts of modern Western philosophy, such as empiricism, rationalism, transcendence, horizontal, and vertical, comes from a failure to understand these self-cultivation studies.
