올림픽 기계체조 미디어 보도의 데이터 기반 주제 분석: 토픽모델링의 적용

본 연구는 토픽모델링을 활용하여 올림픽 기계체조 경기에 대한 미디어 보도의 주요 주제를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국언론진흥재단의 빅카인즈를 통해 2012년 런던올림픽부터 2024년 파리올림픽까지의 기간 동안 ‘올림픽’, ‘체조경기’, ‘논란’, ‘채점’을 키워드로 하여 수집된 2,621건의 언론기사를 연구자료로 선정하였다. 텍스트 전처리 과정에서는 불용어 제거, 토큰화, 명사 추출을 수행하였으며, Coherence Score를 기반으로 최적의 토픽 수를8개로 설정하였다. 분석 결과, 주요 토픽은 ‘여자 체조선수 올림픽 첫 메달리스트’, ‘양학선에 이어 신재환 금메달쾌거’, ‘파리올림픽 도마 경기에서의 도전’, ‘부녀 도쿄올림픽의 꿈’, ‘기계체조 최초 런던올림픽 금메달’, ‘미국 시몬바일스 선수의 도전’, ‘대한민국 선수들의 메달 도전’, ‘파리올림픽 선수들의 부상투혼’ 등으로 도출되었다. 이를 통해올림픽 기계체조 경기에 대한 미디어 보도는 선수 개인의 성과 서사와 가족 내러티브, 부상투혼 등을 중심으로 재구성되며, 체조 종목이 대중과 정서적으로 연결될 수 있는 기제로 작용함을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구결과는 향후 체조종목의 저변 확대와 대중 인식 개선을 위한 미디어 전략 수립에 중요한 기초자료를 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the major themes in media coverage of Olympic artistic gymnastics events using topic modeling. To this end, a total of 2,621 news articles were collected from the Big KINDS database of the Korea Press Foundation, using the keywords “Olympics,” “gymnastics,” “controversy,” and “scoring” for the period spanning the 2012 London Olympics to the 2024 Paris Olympics. During the text preprocessing stage, stop words were removed, tokenization and noun extraction were performed, and the optimal number of topics was determined to be eight based on the coherence score. The analysis identified the following key topics: “First Olympic medalist in women’s gymnastics,” “Shin Jae-hwan’s gold medal following Yang Hak-seon,” “Challenge in vault event at the Paris Olympics,” “Father-daughter dream at the Tokyo Olympics,” “First-ever Olympic gold in artistic gymnastics at London,” “Challenges of U.S. gymnast Simone Biles,” “Korean gymnasts’ pursuit of medals,” and “Fighting spirit through injuries at the Paris Olympics.” The findings indicate that media narratives surrounding Olympic artistic gymnastics frequently reconstruct stories around individual athlete achievements, family-oriented narratives, and perseverance through injury. These narratives serve as emotional conduits that connect the sport with the broader public. The results of this study provide foundational insights that can inform future media strategies aimed at broadening the appeal of gymnastics and improving public perception of the sport.
