기존 방정식의 정확도는 일원 및이원분산분석(one-way and two-way ANOVA), Bland–Altman plot, 동등성 검정(equivalence test), 평균 절대백분율 오차(MAPE)를 통해 평가되었다.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the predictive accuracy of the existing maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂max) estimation equations (Bruce and Foster) for Korean individuals and to develop new age- and sex-specific VO₂ max prediction models. A total of 500 Korean participants aged 13 to 55 years underwent treadmill-based graded exercise testing (GXT) with metabolic gas analysis to directly measure VO₂max. Estimated values from the Bruce and Foster equations were compared against measured values using one-way and two-way ANOVA, Bland–Altman plots, equivalence testing, mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and mean absolute error (MAE). New prediction equations were developed through multiple regression and validated using K-fold cross-validation. Results showed that the existing equations significantly underestimated VO₂max across all age groups, particularly in adolescents (13–19 years), where they failed to meet equivalence criteria. In contrast, the new equations demonstrated lower error rates and satisfied equivalence criteria across all age groups. These findings suggest that the new VO₂max prediction models provide more accurate and reliable estimates for the Korean population and offer a valid foundation for individualized cardiorespiratory fitness evaluation and exercise prescription.
