Abstract
The study was to investigate ethical issues on information searches of clients and counselor self-disclosure in online contexts. A total of 254 professional counselors and trainees completed a questionnaire to identify online client search behaviors and counselor self-disclosure. Results showed that 47% of participants sought information about clients via online searches and 61% reportedly self-disclosed online at least once. The remaining 32% of respondents participated in educational courses for online ethics and 16% obtained informed consent before client searches. Ethical appropriateness of behaviors of online client searches and self-disclosure was assessed in a very conservative manner. Additionally, online client searches were related to younger counselors with typically more acceptable attitudes towards searching for either personal and objective data or non-personal information on clients. Online self-disclosure leaned more towards disclosing professional experience and work values. Implications and suggestions for online counseling ethics are discussed.
