鄭汝昌 道學의 특색에 관한 小考

Abstract

This essay is about some characteristics of Il Doo(一蠹) Jung Yeo­Chang(鄭汝昌)’s the Learning of the Way(道學). Kim Jong­Jik(金宗直) who is Jung Yeo­Chang’ teacher, Kim Going­Pil(金宏弼) who is Jung Yeo­Chang’ classmate, and Jo Gwang­Jo(趙光祖) who is Kim Going­Pil and Jung Yeo­Chang’ student, all of them belong to a school which have been called the School of the Way. In this essay, I characterized the four element as common color of this school: reading of the Confucian classics, studies of Neo­Confucianism, practice of the Elementary Learning(小學) which consists of passages drawn from the Confucian classics which Chu Hsi thought should guide the education of the young preparatory to the program of higher learning set forth in the Great Learning(大學), and a positive attitude to the ideal governance. The underlying aim of the Learning of the Way is to achieve “the governance of people through self­discipling”(修己治人). Through this study, we ascertain how the characteristics of the Learning of the Way take concrete shape in Jung Yeo­Chang’ learning and practice. Moreover, I considered moderateness as a characteristic peculiar to the Jung Yeo­Chang’ Learning of the Way, which I think is worth succeeding from a modern point of view.
