Abstract

This article aims to reveal the characteristics of understanding the I Ching in ancient Korea through Samguk Sagi(三國史記) and Samguk Yusa(三國遺事), which record the ancient history of the Korean Peninsula. Since the main content of the two history books is a summary of historical events, it was not easy to find data related to understanding the I Ching, the subject of this study. Despite these difficulties, this study was based on data directly related to the I Ching from Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa, but also included materials related to the theory of omen(災異說) in the Han Dynasty into the category of understanding the I Ching in a broad sense. As a result, we were able to find several characteristics as follows: First, from the Three Kingdoms period on the Korean Peninsula, specifically the 6th to 7th centuries, to the 10th century during the Later Three Kingdoms period, each country was using the directions and meanings of the eight trigrams in the “The eight trigrams of King Wen(文王八卦)” by applying them to daily life. Second, there are many materials related to the omen theory of the Han Dynasty in Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa. Although the theory of omen that draws on the theory of yin-yang and five elements to interpret it does not fall within the scope of the I Ching in a strict sense, the period in which the Three Kingdoms were active was, in China, since it overlaps with the Han Dynasty and the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, it can be fully assumed that China's main the I Ching’s ideas flowed into and influenced the Korean Peninsula. In this context, the data related to the I Ching’s ideas contained in Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa appear to be deeply related to the Sangsu Divination(象數易) in the Han Dynasty, the I Ching research of Gyeong Bang(京房), Cho Gong(焦贛) and Wang Pil(王弼). Third, all three kingdoms mainly read the Five Classics and the Three History Books as scriptures. In Baekje, Cho Gong's Yeokrim(易林) and Sikjeom(式占) were imported from the Song Dynasty, and in Silla's Taehak, the I Ching was a subject, but it was not included as a subject in the Department of Readings. Meanwhile, the commentary related to the I Ching presumes that Jeong Hyeon(鄭玄) and Wang Pil's were used. Fourth, the only example of the use of yarrow stalks appears in the article about King Jwaji in Garakgukgi in Samguk Yusa. This case takes the typical form of seeking advice from the I Ching regarding a certain incident. It was somewhat surprising to see that the use of yarrow stalks was Garakguk rather than Three Kingdoms. Lastly, it can be confirmed that, unlike other scriptures, the I Ching, which has the unique feature of being a book of fortune-telling, was accepted and studied as a scripture during the Three Kingdoms period, but was used more empirically than theoretical research such as interpretation or evaluation of the I Ching.
