Abstract
In this study we examine the effect of social norm and monetary incentives on tax reporting behavior. Our experimental setting is income reporting task. Participants in our experiment are college students that are majoring in tax accounting. Our experimental study was carried out in the setting that manipulated two types of context and two levels of monetary incentives. We hypothsize that the level of monetary incentives will not affect income reporting behavior in the tax context setting implying social norm but will affect income reporting behavior in the tax context-free setting. Our study examines the effect of different levels of monetary incentives in the income reporting experiment. Experimental setting are consist of two contexts that contain tax context terms and tax context-free terms. Our experimental results are as follows. First, the ratio of income reported to income endowed was significantly lower at the high level of monetary incentives to the low level of monetary incentives in the tax context-free terms setting. Second, there was no significant difference in the ratio of income reported to income endowed between low level and high level of monetary incentives in the tax context terms setting. The results demonstrate that participants in the tax context terms setting are affected by their social norms relating to income reporting behavior and that social norms will not affect taxpayer's pursuing wealth maximization in the tax context-free setting.
